Former UN chief Kofi Annan dies

Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has died, the Kofi Annan Foundation announced on its Twitter page.

Annan, who served as the seventh UN chief for almost 10 years and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, died in the Swiss capital of Bern on Saturday.

“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan  Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the  United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on  Saturday 18th August after a short illness,” read a post on Annan’s Twitter account.
